From Concept to Creation: Join the Genius Lab Laser Fabrication Academy!

Have you ever looked at a cool wooden gadget or a custom-engraved piece of jewelry and wondered, "How did they make that?" Better yet, have you ever thought, "I wish I could make that myself"?
Well, if you're a student in St. Petersburg aged 10 to 17: or a parent looking for the ultimate hands-on experience for your child: get ready to ignite your creativity. The Genius Lab – Digital Carpentry & Laser Fabrication Academy is officially opening its doors, and it’s about to change the game.
We aren't just talking about old-school shop class with dusty saws (though we love those too!). We’re talking about a high-tech fusion of traditional woodworking, professional engineering, and cutting-edge laser technology.
And the best part? Registration is 100% FREE for students in the St. Pete community. Ready to see what’s inside? Let’s dive in.
What Exactly is the Genius Lab?
The Genius Lab is powered by STEM Xposure Inc., an organization dedicated to exposing students to high-paying, high-demand careers in STEM and the construction trades.
In our Digital Carpentry & Laser Fabrication Academy, we’ve designed a 9-week journey (36 total hours of instruction) that takes students from "I have an idea" to "I built and marketed a product." It’s project-based learning at its finest. Instead of just reading about physics or math in a textbook, our students use those principles to calibrate lasers, measure wood, and build furniture.

The Technology: Meet Your New Best Friends
At Genius Lab, we believe in giving students the same tools the professionals use. You won't just be watching a demo; you’ll be hands-on with some serious machinery:
The OMTech AF 2080 80W CO₂ Laser: This is a powerhouse. It can cut and engrave through wood, acrylic, leather, and more with surgical precision. It’s the kind of tech used in advanced manufacturing and high-end design firms.
The Lasermatic XW 30W Laser: Perfect for detailed engraving and intricate work. Students learn how to adjust speed, power, and focus to get the perfect finish every single time.
By the time the program is over, "CO₂ Laser Operator" is a skill our students can actually put on a resume!
The 9-Week Journey: From Safety to Showcase
We’ve broken down the curriculum into a 9-week adventure. Here is a sneak peek at what the students experience:
Weeks 1-2: The Foundations
Before we start the lasers, we start with the essentials. Safety is our number one priority. Students learn about PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), fire safety, and how to respect the tools in the shop.
In Week 2, we tackle the "math of making." Have you ever tried to build a shelf and realized your measurements were off by half an inch? It’s frustrating! We teach students how to read a tape measure with 100% accuracy and understand wood species. Their first project? A Personalized Wooden Ruler that they’ll use for the rest of the course.
Weeks 3-4: The Digital Edge
This is where the "digital" in Digital Carpentry comes in. We introduce students to CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software like LightBurn and Inkscape. This is the same software used by architects and engineers around the world.
Students learn how to take a drawing from their head, turn it into a digital vector file, and send it to the laser. They’ll create Custom Keychains and Coasters, experimenting with different materials like cork, birch plywood, and acrylic.

Weeks 5-7: Building & Engineering
Now it’s time to get hands-on with carpentry. Students pick up cordless drills, sanders, and impact drivers to assemble projects like the Wooden Tool Caddy. They learn about fasteners, wood glue, and structural integrity.
In Week 6 and 7, we turn up the heat with an Engineering Design Challenge. Students have to think like designers to create a Laser-Cut Desk Organizer and even delve into architecture by building Mini Furniture Pieces or Tiny House Models.
Weeks 8-9: Entrepreneurship & The Big Reveal
At Genius Lab, we don’t just want you to be a maker: we want you to be a mogul. In Week 8, we focus on Entrepreneurship. Students learn how to brand their products, take professional photos, and calculate "Cost of Goods Sold."
How much does a piece of birch cost?
How much time did the laser run?
What should the final price be?
Finally, Week 9 is the Capstone Project & Makers Showcase. This is a massive community event at the Enoch Davis Center. Students present their signature product: whether it’s home decor, custom jewelry, or a high-end cutting board: to the community.

More Than Just a Hobby: Real Career Pathways
We love having fun, but we’re also serious about the future. The skills learned in the Digital Carpentry & Laser Fabrication Academy are direct gateways to high-paying professional careers. When students graduate from this program, they have a professional portfolio that can help them get into college programs or land apprenticeships.
Where can these skills take you?
Architecture & Interior Design: Designing the spaces we live and work in.
